Using a UV/Visible Light Meter to Monitor Light Levels
June 20, 2013
Pine County Historical Society
Askov, Minnesota
Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums Annual Meeting
Presented by Elisa Redman, Director of Preservation Services, this workshop will concentrate on the importance of monitoring both ultraviolet and visible light levels for collections. It will focus on the use of Elsec 764 and the new Elsec 765 UV and Visible Light Meters. The workshop will review: how visible and UV light affects collections materials; different types of artificial lighting and light filters in relation to the types of light wavelengths that are produced; and why certain types of light sources are better than others. Techniques for limiting light levels will also be discussed, as well as practical low-cost steps that museum staff members may take for limiting light exposure to their collections. The mechanics of how to properly use a light meter will be shown, as well as how to program the Elsec meter for measurements in lux or footcandles. Each participant will receive technical leaflets on monitoring light levels and protecting collections through limiting light exposure, as well as information on obtaining grant funding for purchasing an Elsec Light Meter.
Using Dataloggers to Monitor the Museum Environment
June 21, 2013
Pine County Historical Society
Askov, Minnesota
Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums Annual Meeting
This workshop will concentrate on the importance of monitoring internal environments for collections, focusing on the use of dataloggers. The workshop will review how incorrect and fluctuating temperature and relative humidity affect collection artifacts. Because many small and medium-sized collecting institutions in the Midwest have minimal environmental controls, the concepts of seasonal set points and seasonal drift will be reviewed. A variety of datalogging equipment will be discussed and demonstrated, including HOBO brand dataloggers from Onset Computer Corporation and PEM2 dataloggers available from the Image Permanence Institute. Each participant will receive technical leaflets on environmental monitoring, protecting collections through stable environments, appropriate environmental conditions for collection artifacts, selecting monitoring equipment, as well as information on obtaining grant funding to purchase dataloggers.
