Waitlist Only In-Person Safe Storage: Making Boxes + Mounts for Collections
Host Site: St. Olaf College Archives- Northfield, MN
Thursday, October 15 – Friday, October 16, 2026 10:00am – 4:30pm
In this tow-day workshop, participants will be introduced to a variety of stable and inert materials to use in collection storage and display. Discussions of storage enclosures and their benefits for physical protection as well as environmental buffering will be included, as well as air quality, air circulation, and common sources of pollution in storage areas. Working from a provided template, participants will learn basic box-making skills by creating their own tool storage box, and then they will expand on those skills by creating a custom box and support for either an example item or an item that they are able to provide. All materials will be provided and the participants will leave with a starter set of box-making tools. Topics will be geared slightly more towards library and archives material, but will be applicable to all types of collection items.

Waitlist Only In-Person Introduction to the Care of Textiles
Host Site: American Swedish Institute- Minneapolis, MN
Wednesday, January 13, 2027 9:00am – 4:00pm
This one-day, in-person workshop taught by our Senior Textile Conservator, Beth McLaughlin. Included will be an introduction to the different types of textiles, from historic clothing to fine art wall-hangings; a hands-on id lab to characterize common fibers; a discussion of the agents of deterioration (particularly light exposure) as they effect textiles; and a demonstration of exhibition and storage materials.
